Adult Literacy Class Graduation

The 21st of January was a memorable day for all of us. 10 adult learners graduated after 2 years of literacy training. It was a great celebration in the presence of their families and sponsors of the program. The learners performed a small play in which they illustrated what situations you can get yourself into if you are not literate. The news of their graduation made it to the national newspaper. The play performed was about a person who was not able to read signs in his community. Signs about not being allowed to urinate everywhere. He was then arrested and fined. This illustrated that not being able to read can put you in awkward situations.

We do not realize the impact being literate has on our lives. We take it for granted. The 10 graduates are now able to go to the bank and sign their names, read the lables on the medication given to them by doctors, read important signs in their community as well as newspapers and so on.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Margaret Wojeo, Mrs. Ruth Hughes and the SK Foundation represented by Mr. IJsbrant Spier. And we look forward to a new round of literacy training in 2012.
